My fierce pitbull mix
Pitbulls have gotten a bad name because of people like Vick. If you've not had the chance to be around Leia (my Am Staff mix- Am Staff being a type of pitbull) or some other loving pitbull than you don't know how sweet these dogs really are.
Leia LOVES Kaitlyn!
There are three reasons pitbulls make good fighting dogs:
1- The are very strong- there is no denying that they are a powerful breed!! My big moose of a dog is very strong!
2- They can be dog aggressive- and yes my beloved Leia has some negative feelings toward other dogs and we are working on it.
3- They are fiercely loyal- this is the key, a lot of breeds are aggressive and strong, but the pitbull breeds in particular love people. I know the media would have you believe something else. But ask any good pitbull owner- they will all say the same thing- they never owned a more loyal and loving dog!
So what is my point? I understand that Vick has paid his debt to society, and that football is his 'job' and he should be able to get back to it. But I simply wish that they Eagles cared more about the character of it's players then the money and publicity they can get from signing him. This wasn't a one time event, this wasn't a simply mistake, this man made a choice to run a ring in which dogs where killed, raped and tortured. To me this reveals his character- this is a man who was making millions of dollars playing football- it is not like the did this because he needed the money. So this is a athlete who not only feels they are above the law, but find enjoyment in the suffering of animals. Yeah that's the guy you want to run your offense!!

I am just sad that it is easy for people to say "He served his time, now let him score touchdowns and move on!" I wish that people could see his crime was not an accident, it was a choice and reveals a dangerous character flaw and that to me is the biggest issue.
Playing with Ellie when she was 1...such a scary dog!

Crime is a choice for most anyone, not just Vick. If Vick was just a nobody and his occupation was not high profile it wouldn't matter to anyone that he is going back to work. Unfortunatley the guy is a very good player so he gets to press reset and once again enjoy a very high profile job that will continiue to make him rich. The guy obviously has an askew moral compass and in a perfect world he would not be allowed a reset with his career.
Pit Bulls are a whole other can if worms. The breed is loyal but also very agressive. Granted I have a skewed opinon
of them (seeing the aftermath of what a 60 year old woman looks like after her scalp was torn off and she suffered puncture wounds on every major body part tends to affect you). Every case I've dealt with concerning dogs attacking people it's been a Pit Bull. Each time the owner
has claimed that it was the most gentle dog and it never had been agressive in the past. I think it's beacuse of their fierce loyalty they appear dangerous. It seems that if they sense a threat they respond out of instinct to protect. Which is probably the unfortunate reason that Pits are the dog of choice for drug dealers.
Eric- for what it is worth any pit bull owner who says their dog has NEVER shown aggression is lying! They may not have done it to people but there is no doubt they have shown aggression to other dogs! And I am willing to guess they have shown some form of aggression to a person - maybe not bitten or attacked but certainly shown the early signs of not like a person. I have seen Leia get tense when she see certain types of people (usually sketchy ones!) and I redirect her from that situation. My guess is those bad owners have seen it and ignore it, or worst yet like when their dog does that!
I love Leia- but I know she is aggressive- every time a dog walks past our front window she looses her mind (which I am working on with her). But there is no doubt in my mind that all pitbulls have a level of aggression- it is simply about how the owner deals with it. Those owners who's dogs do damage to people or other dogs are irresponsible! No dog, much less a strong dog should ever be off leash and/or able to get away. There is a reason why Leia is crated and not left in the back yard. I have read up on the breed and know that pits get board and will try to get out of yards to find their owners. That is when they do damage- when the owner has been irresponsible and the dog is out of their control- that is the crime to me! And those owners should loose their dogs and be put in jail.
You know my girl and she is sweet and loves people, and most pits I have met are very similar. And there are other dogs that are actually more aggressive, but they are not near as powerful. Statistically more people are bit by cocker spaniels each year- but those dogs don't have the powerful body and jaw of the pitbulls. Pitbull owners have a responsibility to train and socialize their dogs as well as confine them in a proper manner to ensure their safety and the publics...and sadly most don't. You're right drug deals love them because they are powerful.
As for Vick- the only good thing I see for him is that he is being mentored by Tony Dungee ...and amazing coach and very strong follower of Christ.
I totally agree with you, Anderson, about Vick and the true gladness Brian and I felt when we heard Dungy was going to mentor him.
It's been interesting to read the comments on the sports websites about this issue. What I hate is how sometimes people put less condemnation on crimes against other people than they do against animals. Very often abuse of animals even leads to the abuse of other people. However, some of the people who say Vick shouldn't be let back into the League care more about the treatment of animals than the treatment of human children. There are rapists and child abusers, etc. who "do their time", too, and I don't personally want a tortuter of people held to a standard of less accountability than torturers of animals.
